<<The singer must be willing to admit limitations of voice and style and not attempt parts which do not come within the compass of her attainments. Neither is it wise to force the voice up or down when it seems a great effort to do so. We can all think of singers whose natural quality is mezzo—let us say—who try to force the voice up into a higher register. There is one artist of great dramatic gifts, who not content with the rich quality of her natural organ, tried to add several high notes to the upper portion. The result was disastrous. Again, some of our young singers who possess beautiful, sweet voices, should not force them to the utmost limit of power, simply to fill, or try to fill a great space. The life of the voice will be impaired by such injurious practice.>>
Il cantante deve essere disposto ad ammettere delle limitazioni di voce e di stile e a non tentare parti che non rientrino nell'ambito delle proprie capacità. Né è saggio forzare la voce verso l'alto o verso il basso quando far ciò risulta un grande sforzo. Possiamo tutti pensare a cantanti la cui qualità naturale è media—diciamo—i quali cercano di forzare la voce in su in un registro più alto. Esiste un'artista con grandi doni drammatici, che non contenta con la qualità ricca del suo organo naturale, ha cercato di aggiungere diverse note alte alla parte superiore. Il risultato è stato disastroso. Per di più, alcuni dei nostri giovani cantanti che possiedono voci belle e dolci, non dovrebbero forzarle al limite massimo di potenza, semplicemente per riempire, o cercare di riempire un grande spazio. La vita della voce sarà compromessa da tale pratica dannosa.
